Get Fit While You Sit!

Get Fit While You Sit!

The Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center and the Avera Queen of Peace Wellness Center are sponsoring a 30-minute class for the general public and for cancer patients and their families called “Get Fit While You Sit!” According to Charlene Berke, Director of Radiation Oncology, “The group will meet every Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. for eight weeks starting March 23 in the lobby of the Cancer Center. The group approach to exercise is good for the morale and encouragement of folks with cancer and their families. There’s no charge for the class and all are welcome.”
Cindy Riddle will lead the classes with assistance from other Wellness Center instructors. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer treatment can cause fatigue which exercising can help combat. In addition, cancer treatment can reduce the ability of the immune system and exercising helps boost the immune system; cancer can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other conditions, and exercising can help reduce the risks of these conditions. Finally, exercising helps increases range of motion and the ability to perform activities of daily living.
According to Riddle, “Everyone can benefit from exercising as it helps to promote health and well-being. The chair exercise classes can help individuals who have cancer in that same way. Exercising in a group is always more fun than exercising alone.” Berke stated, “We’re excited about having the chair exercise classes at the Cancer Center as the classes will add another element to our cancer services. I know our patients and their families will enjoy feeling better and working in a group to improve their health.”
For more information about “Get Fit While You Sit!” please contact Charlene Berke, Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center, at 995-5756 or Cindy Riddle, Avera Queen of Peace Wellness Center, at 995-2445.

Dakota Discovery Museum...National Youth Art Month

Goodnight My Angel by Joshua Dutt, 11th Grade 2009 submission

March is National Youth Art Month and to recognize students in our region the Dakota Discovery Museum is hosting the 2010 Youth Art Show. This annual exhibit offers South Dakota students the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting and have it evaluated by professional artists.

The arts are often considered of limited importance, while in reality they provide children the opportunity to develop skills they will need as adults. Experience in the arts develops self-esteem and self expression, as well as appreciation for the work of others. It also helps to develop the critical thinking skills vital in today’s quickly changing social environment. Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school and community art programs.

Students grades K through 12 who live or attend school in South Dakota, including home schools, are eligible. Entry forms are available on-line www.dakotadiscovery.com or by calling 996-2122.

The 2010 Youth Art Show will open on March 1 and will run through Saturday, March 27 at the museum, located on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University at 1300 McGovern Ave., Mitchell. A free reception is planned for Saturday, March 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Professional artists will be on hand to critique student’s work. Regular museum hours for the exhibit during March will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. During the exhibit, admission is free for student artists and their immediate family.

Dakota Discovery Museum...Detective Program

The Dakota Discovery Museum will be hosting a new mystery for the children’s Dakota Discovery Detectives program on Saturday, February 13.

Aspiring detectives ages 3-8 will have a chance to solve a real museum mystery! Participants will look for clues hidden in the museum and record the clues in their very own Top Secret Detective Notebook to solve the mystery. Arts and crafts projects related to the mystery’s solution will complete the class time.
Future Detectives classes will be held on March 13 and April 17. Each month offers a different mystery to solve.

There is a cost per child of $4 for non-members and $2 for museum members. Pre-registration is required, and class size is limited, so please call ahead to reserve your space. Parents are welcome to accompany their children.

Detectives ages 3 through 5 will meet at the Dakota Discovery Museum from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM and Detectives ages 6 through 8 will meet from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

Childcare providers and preschool instructors are welcome to inquire about booking this program for their group at any date other than the scheduled public classes.

Please contact Lori Holmberg for more information about any of these programs at 605-996-2122 or via email at edu@dakotadiscovery.com.

The Dakota Discovery Museum is located on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University, 1300 McGovern Ave. The museum is currently closed to the general public but tours can be arranged.

Red Cross Training

The Dakota Plains Chapter in Mitchell, SD has been very busy not only responding to disasters but advancing and training our volunteers to be better prepared to respond when the call for help comes.   February 2-6, the Dakota Plains Chapter hosted its 5th Annual PREPARE Disaster Institute at the MTI Technology Center in Mitchell.   16 courses were offered and 141 volunteers were  trained throughout the course of the week.   21 volunteers from the Dakota Plains Chapter took training.    Kay Thomas will be teaching Disaster Classes the first Saturday in March, April, and May at the Red Cross office in Mitchell.  In March, Mass Care will be taught, in April, Sheltering, and in May, Client Assistance.   To register for classes or for more information, please call 996-3087.    The volunteers who attended the Disaster Institute are now better trained to respond locally and nationally on behalf of the American Red Cross.

The local Chapter anticipates responding to flooding this spring in northern South Dakota and North Dakota.   If you have a few days to give and would like to help the American Red Cross, we urge you to call the Chapter and register for the upcoming training courses.   Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Red Cross.  The services the American Red Cross provides in and to your communities would not be possible without the help of volunteers like Kay Thomas.
